Good habits

Dating safety tips

Before the date

  • Meet in public: Always choose a public place for first dates — coffee shops, restaurants, or busy parks.
  • Tell someone: Let a friend or family member know where you're going, who you're meeting, and when you expect to be back.
  • Research the venue: Look up the location beforehand and make sure it's in a safe, well-lit area.
  • Plan your transportation: Arrange your own transportation to and from the date. Don't rely on your date for a ride home.
  • Trust your instincts: If something feels off before the date, it's okay to cancel or reschedule.

During the date

  • Stay sober: Keep your wits about you. Avoid excessive alcohol consumption on first dates.
  • Watch your drink: Never leave your drink unattended. If you do, order a new one.
  • Share your location: Use Hookt's live date tracking to let friends know where you are in real time.
  • Keep your phone charged: Ensure your phone has enough battery to last the entire date.
  • Listen to your gut: If you feel uncomfortable at any point, it's okay to end the date early.

Red flags to watch for

  • Pressure: Anyone who pressures you to do things you're not comfortable with.
  • Inconsistencies: Stories that don't add up or frequent changes in their narrative.
  • Isolation: Attempts to isolate you from public spaces or your friends.
  • Aggression: Any signs of anger, aggression, or controlling behavior.
  • Disrespect: Disrespectful comments or behavior toward you or others.

Online safety

  • Protect personal info: Don't share your full name, address, workplace, or other identifying details too early.
  • Use in-app messaging: Keep conversations in the Hookt app until you feel comfortable sharing your phone number.
  • Video chat first: Use Hookt's in-app video calling before meeting in person to verify they match their photos.
  • Search them up: A quick online search can verify their identity and surface red flags.
  • Report suspicious behavior: Use Hookt's reporting features if someone makes you uncomfortable.
